01/01/2007 - Dallas, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Joe Thornton had a goal and two assists as the San Jose Sharks rebounded from their worst loss in more than 11 years with a 4-2 victory over Dallas at American Airlines Center.
Jonathan Cheechoo and Patrick Marleau each contributed a goal and an assist for the Sharks, who snapped a three-game slide and were just a day removed from dropping an 8-0 decision to Phoenix on Saturday night.
Joe Pavelski also tallied for San Jose and Vesa Toskala stopped 21-of-23 shots faced.
Sergei Zubov and Niklas Hagman notched the goals for Dallas, which saw its brief two-game winning streak halted. The Stars had won four of their last five games coming into the night, despite missing captain Brenden Morrow and veteran centers Mike Modano and Eric Lindros.
Usually reliable netminder Marty Turco surrendered three goals on 10 shots in the first period before he was replaced by Mike Smith. Smith made 18 saves the rest of the way.
Pavelski's tally gave the Sharks an early 1-0 lead. Off a Dallas turnover along the left boards, Pavelski corralled the puck, backtracked and tried a wraparound effort. He sent a shot at Turco, got mixed up in traffic, then took another whack at the rebound as he fell to the ice, tucking the disc past the fallen netminder at 1:25.
A power play marker doubled the margin a short time later. After winning the draw in the offensive zone, the Sharks peppered Turco with three straight shots. Cheechoo took the initial shot, but the puck ricocheted off a skate in front and was deflected to the right, where Josh Gorges failed to knock home the rebound. Thornton also attempted a shot before Cheechoo poked it home at 5:18.
Dallas used a power play marker to cut its deficit in half just under two minutes later. Zubov traded passes with Philippe Boucher before getting into position and firing a slapshot from just inside the blueline that zipped by Toskala and into the upper corner of the net to make it 2-1.
The Sharks quickly rebuilt a two-goal lead with their own opportunity on the man-advantage. Thornton sent a pass to Cheechoo from behind the net, and the right winger fired a wrist shot that was deflected, with the rebound sitting in the crease. Camped out in front, Marleau managed to slide the disc past Turco, ending the netminder's night at 9:05.
An odd-man rush put the Sharks up 4-1 to cap the first period scoring. Thornton notched his 11th goal of the season on a wrist shot that hit Smith in the pads before trickling through his legs and across the goal line at 11:36. It also marked Thornton's 200th career NHL goal.
The action slowed down considerably in the second period, as the teams combined for 14 shots on goal without lighting the lamp on either side.
The Stars tried to close the gap in the third, as Hagman's quick release on the snapshot found room between the stick and the pad of Toskala to make it 4-2 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
Dallas had a power play opportunity with just under four minutes remaining, but Nabokov stood tall in net and made several key saves the rest of the way.
Game Notes
Three previous meetings between Dallas and San Jose resulted in shutouts. The season series is now tied 2-2...The Stars are 13-6-0 as the home team this season...Sharks right wing Scott Parker left the game with an ankle injury in the second period and did not return...San Jose is 17-3-0 when they score first.

Will Ohio State continue to run the table in College Football betting odds?
MySportsbook.com favors Buckeyes, Fighting Irish and Golden Bears in this weekend's big games.
NEW YORK, NY, Sept. 21 - My Sportsbook NCAA football fans: things are beginning to get really interesting on college football's national stage. Following last weekend's "Separation Saturday", which included five teams ranked in the top 15 dropping games, the BCS Championship picture is beginning to take shape - with Ohio State leading the charge. And, according to odds makers at MySportsbook.com, the number-one-ranked Buckeyes will continue their winning ways this weekend.
Revenge will be the name of the game in Columbus this Saturday, as Ohio State looks to even the score following last season's loss to Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions. Although Penn State are listed as 16.5 point underdogs, they are 11-10 all-time versus the Buckeyes. Paterno and the Lions, however, will have to shut down Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith who has thrown for 769 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
Speaking of revenge, Notre Dame will be out for some against Michigan State, following last year's 44 - 41 overtime loss to the Spartans in South Bend. The thirteenth-ranked Irish, listed as a 3-point favorite, will also be looking to avenge last Saturday's thrashing from the Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.
Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
