Thornton leads West All-Star balloting

12/27/2006 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - San Jose Sharks forward Joe Thornton leads all Western Conference players in fan balloting for the NHL All-Star Game.

Thornton has received 614,753 votes and has a lead of more than 70,000 votes on Anaheim defenseman Scott Niedermayer, who has garnered 540,380.

The other two forward slots are held by Colorado's Joe Sakic, with 431,961 votes, and San Jose's Jonathan Cheechoo, who has 407,366. Next is another Shark, Patrick Marleau, with 394,710.

Nicklas Lidstrom of Detroit trails Niedermayer among defensemen, but his 522,345 votes are well ahead of write-in candidate Rory Fitzpatrick. The Vancouver blueliner, who doesn't have a point in 22 games, has 486,842 votes.

Roberto Luongo of the Canucks leads all goaltenders with 438,155 votes, nearly 71,000 more than Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff.

The top three forwards, top two defensemen and top goaltender among the voting will start this year's All-Star Game, which is set to take place on Wednesday, January 24 in Dallas.

Balloting continues through January 2.
