Sharks resume their trek in Tampa

10/29/2006 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The San Jose Sharks attempt to stop their first losing streak of the season tonight as the team continues its road trip with a visit to the St. Pete Times Forum to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Sharks began the season with victories in seven of their first nine games and opened up this current five-game road swing with Monday's 3-0 win at Columbus. San Jose has since dropped back-to-back contests, most recently a 4-3 setback to Nashville on Thursday.

Scott Hartnell scored the tie-breaking goal with 2:29 left to play as the Predators got a measure of revenge for their ousting by the Sharks in last April's Western Conference quarterfinals.

Joe Thornton assisted on all three San Jose goals, which came from Mark Bell, Marek Michalek and Patrick Marleau. Vesa Toskala made 25 saves in the losing effort.

Thornton, who has yet to score a goal this season, is now tied for second among NHL players with 13 assists in 2006-07.

The Sharks will now play in an arena where they haven't enjoyed much success in recent years. San Jose is 0-3-1 in its last four appearances at the St. Pete Times Forum and hasn't won there since an 8-0 drubbing of the Lightning on February 8, 2000.

However, San Jose has won 10 of its last 11 games against Eastern Conference opponents and went 5-0 versus the Southeast Division a year ago, including a 3-1 victory over the Lightning at the Shark Tank.

The teams battled to a 2-2 tie in their most recent meeting in Tampa on October 30, 2004.

The Lightning look to shake off last night's defeat at Carolina which ended the team's three-game win streak. The Hurricanes recorded three goals within a 43-second span in the first period en route to a 6-4 triumph.

Vinny Prospal and Vincent Lecavalier each had a goal and an assist for the Lightning, who downed Carolina 5-1 Thursday in Tampa. Goaltender Marc Denis allowed four goals on 17 shots before being replaced in the second period by Johan Holmqvist, who ended with 10 saves.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .

''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''

Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.

He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.

''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''

Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
