08/11/2010 - Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Top-ranked Rafael Nadal, reigning champion Andy Murray and world No. 2 Novak Djokovic were each second-round winners Wednesday at the $2.43 million Roger Cup, an ATP Masters event.
The reigning Wimbledon and French Open champion Nadal escaped a lengthy first- set tiebreak and downed Stanislas Wawrinka, 7-6 (14-12), 6-3. Nadal captured this Canadian Masters event in 2005 and 2008.
The fourth-seeded Murray continued his winning ways at this tournament with an 80-minute 7-5, 6-2 victory over once-promising Belgian Xavier Malisse. Murray swatted seven aces and broke Malisse on four occasions in the predictable bout.
The Australian Open runner-up Murray beat Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in last year's Rogers Cup finale, in Montreal. This event shifts between Montreal and Toronto each year.
Up next for the two-time Grand Slam finalist Murray will be talented Frenchman Gael Monfils.
Djokovic, who struggled mightily with the hot conditions here on Day 3, snuck past game Frenchman Julien Benneteau 7-5, 7-5 on the hardcourts at Rexall Centre. The 2007 Rogers Cup titlist Djokovic required the services of a trainer during the hard-fought encounter, but was able to finish off his French counterpart in straight sets in 2 hours, 12 minutes.
The former Aussie Open champion Djokovic will face Romanian Victor Hanescu in the round of 16 here.
Sixth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko moved on with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Italian qualifier Fabio Fognini, while former top-five Argentine star David Nalbandian stayed red-hot with a 56-minute 6-3, 6-0 pasting of former top-10 Spaniard Tommy Robredo. The 2003 Rogers Cup runner-up Nalbandian was last week's hardcourt champ at the U.S. Open Series event in Washington, D.C. and has now won his last 10 matches on tour.
Mild upsets came when Jeremy Chardy rallied past ninth-seeded Fernando Verdasco, 6-7 (9-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, rising Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov took out 12th-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 and Frenchman Michael Llodra dismissed 14th-seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. The lefthanded Llodra's third-round opponent will be the great Roger Federer, who captured this Canadian Masters event in 2004 and 2006 and was the runner- up in 2007.
Sam Querry, seeded 16th, was also bit by the upset bug, dropping a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4 decision to Kevin Anderson.
A 15th-seeded Monfils avoided an upset by handling Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker 7-5, 6-3, while the aforementioned Hanescu got past Canadian wild card Peter Polansky 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Other second-round winners included Philipp Kohlschreiber, who downed Viktor Troicki, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0, and Yen-Hsun Lu, who rallied past Paul-Henri Mathieu, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5).
This week's big winner will collect $443,500.

In terms of sports wagering, the NFL is "the most popular game in town." The explanation behind that is easy.
It is called the "pointspread."
Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. For example, if the Bears were playing the Giants, and it shaped up as a competitive contest, the Bears might be, say, a 7/5 favorite. If they were playing an also-ran, it might be 10/1. Well, there is a point where a line becomes prohibitive, as far as betting the favorite. And who would waste money betting an underdog that has virtually no chance? Such a setup did not contribute to promoting betting action.
But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.
A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.
In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.
The establishment of the pointspread as the corner stone around which team sports like football can be wagered upon was truly what brought gridiron betting into the stratosphere for online football betting .
